Programs and Support Groups For Breast Cancer Patients

The Comprehensive Breast Health Center offers many programs and support services for breast care patients to ease your worry, share your success and introduce you to experts and other patients with similar experiences. At Little Company of Mary, you won't go through anything alone.

Support Groups

  • Breast Cancer Support Group: Little Company of Mary offers a monthly Breast Cancer Support Group Meeting open to current patients and survivors. This group meets in room S1150 of the Cancer Center the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Advance registration is NOT required.
  • Caregiver Support Group: This monthly support group is open to anyone in the community caring for a loved one who is ill. The group meetings will cover topics such as identifying helpful community resources and learning ways to effectively reduce stress. For more information call 708-229-4663.


Support Services

Integrative Therapy Sessions at The Cancer Center:

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture can be very effective in treating ailments experienced by cancer patients, such as pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, neuropathy, hot flashes, insomnia, loss of appetite, anxiety, dry mouth, bowel problems, and depression. Sessions are offered by appointment only.
  • Art Class: Escape the everyday and focus on creating art. Receive the meditative and relaxation benefits of artistic expression in a supportive environment. Instruction provided in various mediums that encourage students to invite their inner artists to flourish. Advance registration is required.
  • Easy Yoga: Participants learn basic yoga postures; which include balance, stretching, and breathing techniques. The class meets Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. Advance registration is NOT required.
  • Guided Imagery: Guided Imagery combines features of hypnosis and meditation that help reduce physical tension and stress, manage pain, decrease anxiety, improve sleep, and enhance the immune system. Guided imagery sessions are provided by appointment only.
  • Healing Touch: Healing Touch is a form of “energy work” used to promote relaxation, relieve anxiety, and reduce pain. Healing Touch is offered on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Sessions are scheduled by appointment only.
  • Hypnosis: Hypnosis is a wonderful tool that can help to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, aid in the post-surgical healing process, reduce stress, and improve overall quality of life. Hypnosis meets the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. - Noon. Advance registration is required.
  • Look Good Feel Better: Look Good Feel Better is a free workshop, teaching women with cancer how to manage the side effects to one’s appearance, including instruction on how to address changes to skin and nails, as well as hair loss. Registration is required.
  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an approach that combines meditation, dialog, reflective inquiry, mindful yoga and movement as a means of assisting patients to work more effectively with stress, pain, and illness. Advance registration is required.
  • Meditation: Meditation is a mind-body process that uses concentration on your breathing to attune the body and calm the mind. Recent scientific studies have now proven that meditation can reduce anxiety and pain, while improving the psychological well-being and quality of life for cancer patients. Advance registration is NOT required.
  • Picnic In The Park: Picnic In The Park is an educational series in which guest speakers present on various cancer and health related topics. The program is held the first, second, and fourth Tuesday of each month. Advance registration is required.
  • Mini Spa: Patients currently undergoing treatment for their cancer can schedule appointments for our complimentary Mini Spa services. Licensed practitioners provide manicures, pedicures, facials, massage, and Reiki treatments. Mini Spa is offered most Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., by appointment only.
  • Nutritional Programming: The Integrative Therapy program proudly collaborates with Chef Ryan Hutmacher of Centered Chef to offer quality nutritional programs to patients and their families. Several times throughout the year, Chef Ryan visits the hospital to share his wealth of knowledge, detailed cooking instructions, nutritional information, and samples of his delicious healthy food creations. Advance registration is required.
  • Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC): The Council is comprised of hospital staff and administration as well as cancer patients and their family members. Together, the Council works to identify patient and family needs, evaluate the effectiveness of current processes, find ways to improve the standard of care, and advocate for patient-centered care across the institution.
