Certified Stroke Care

What is a Certified Acute Stroke Program?

Little Company of Mary's Recently Certified Acute Stroke Program was designed to ensure that Initial Acute Stroke care delivery is provided, based on evidence based practice recommendations specific to the adult patient (18 years or older) population presenting with signs and symptoms of acute stroke/TIA/traumatic brain injury. Care will delivered by a trained Emergency team and/or Rapid Response Team. A custom interdisciplinary plan of care will be delivered throughout the patient's length of stay at the hospital.

Additionally, certified stroke centers make a commitment for ongoing community education focused on risk factors for stroke, risk factors for medication compliance, stroke prevention, and recognition of signs and symptoms of acute stroke.

Stroke Awareness:

Incidence in Women: It is the 3rd leading cause of death, a leading cause of disability and an ongoing epidemic among females accounting for more than 60% of all stroke deaths in the U.S.

Recognizing the Signs of a Stroke:

F=Facial asymmetry (ask the person to smile or show their teeth)

A=Arm Drift (ask the person to raise both arms and watch for drift or difficulty)

S=Speech - Slurred or Strange (ask the person to repeat a simple phrase)

T=Time - Call 911 (this is a medical emergency!)

Stroke Prevention:

What we can do to immediately make a positive impact on stroke prevention and ultimately lower our Stroke Risk:

  • Stop smoking
  • Control Diabetes
  • Know your cholesterol levels (control high cholesterol)
  • Know your blood pressure (control high blood pressure)
  • Identify chaotic heart rhythms (Atrial Fibrillation)
  • Identify and treat circulatory disorders (routine checkups and seek medical evaluation for dizziness, leg or arm cramps, SOB, palpitations, weakness, fatigue, fast or irregular pulse or heart beat, anemias)
  • Exercise and Healthy Dietary changes
  • Control alcohol
  • History of TIA or previous stroke medical follow up & medication compliance
