14,000 People Gathered on Mother’s Day to Join the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Little Company of Mary’s 18th Annual Beverly Breast Cancer Walk Took Place on Sunday, May 14th.

On Mother’s Day, May 14th, more than 14,000 men, women and children gathered together to walk the 18th Annual Beverly Breast Cancer Walk (BBCW). Participants joined together to embark the three-mile route through the historic Beverly Hills and Morgan Park neighborhood. This great turnout was in support of Little Company of Mary’s Nationally Accredited and award-winning Comprehensive Breast Health Center.

Nearly three decades ago, Chicago area resident, Carol Moriarty, one of the three original BBCW founders, found herself at Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center receiving treatments to aid in her battle with breast cancer. After a successful plan of treatments, Carol found herself cancer-free and with a new profound vision for life. Today, hundreds of women like Carol have found compassionate and state-of-the-art treatment at Little Company of Mary’s Nationally Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center.

“It’s truly remarkable to look back and see how far this family-centered historic walk has come. It began with three pioneering women (Carol Moriarty, Nancy Mulcahy and Lisa O’Brien) who believed in fighting breast cancer with one step at a time on one of the most memorable days of the year – Mother’s Day,” said Brian Lepacek, MDiv, Executive Director of the Little Company of Mary Hospital Foundation. “Who would have dreamed 18 years ago that Carol, Lisa and Nancy would today walk with more than 14,000 friends? Eighteen years is living proof that if we join hands and talents together, we can make a difference – and save lives.”

Over the past 18 years, the BBCW has raised more than $5 million to support LCMH’s award-winning Comprehensive Breast Health Center and impacted the lives of thousands of breast cancer survivors. With generous community support in 2016, the BBCW was able to sustain its support of current breast health programming and continue deepening its impact with the establishment of a BBCW Crisis Fund to assist LCMH breast cancer patients with emergent financial needs within our community. Additionally, a portion of the 2016 event proceeds supported a “sister-walk” partnership with the international organization, People Helping People, bringing much-needed medical equipment, supplies and services to breast cancer patients in poverty-stricken El Salvador. In 2017, our top funding priorities include continued expansion of breast health programming, assisting those who may be in financial crisis during their treatment and empowering survivors through our second annual Cancer Survivor Event.

This year’s Walk is on track to raise more than $500,000 to benefit Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center that is located in the Women’s Center for Life and Health. The Center continues to address women’s health and wellness and provide forward-thinking, gender-sensitive healthcare for women of all ages. The Women’s Center was recently awarded with the 2017 Women’s Choice Award for being one of nation’s best breast centers for the fourth consecutive year, acknowledging its dedication to providing exceptional patient care and treatment. By carrying the evidence-based designation of the Women’s Choice Award seal, Little Company of Mary’s Nationally Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center has signified its commitment to a global mission to elevate the patient experience for women and all patients.

“The Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Little Company of Mary has been recognized as one of the top in the nation because of this community that has supported us for the last 18 years,” said Dr. Jilma Patrick, fellowship-trained breast surgeon at Little Company of Mary Hospital. “Together, we will continue to support the fighters of breast cancer, admire the survivors, honor the ones who were taken, and we will never give up hope – Because finding a cure starts with hope.”
