LCM’s Breast Surgeon is Called to Military Service in Afghanistan
On Wednesday, July 24th, Little Company of Mary (LCMH) hosted a special blessing for their fellowship-trained female breast surgeon and Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Nancy Taft. Dr. Taft was recently deployed to Afghanistan. The Blessing was held in the hospital’s cafeteria where she received a patriotic salute for her dedication and service.
More than 150 former and current patients, along with LCMH physicians, nurses, and employees joined together to wish Dr. Taft a safe journey. Many of Dr. Taft’s former and current patients tearfully thanked her for her devotion on helping them not only fight breast cancer but supporting them during their long healthcare journey. “Dr. Taft sees women as much more than patients but as mothers, daughters, sisters, and community leaders,” said Jeanine O’Malley, a current breast cancer patient. “Dr. Taft held my hand when I couldn’t bare the weight of my cancer diagnosis. She is the positive voice telling me that I am going to fight cancer and see my children grow older.”
After Dr. Taft received a special blessing she gave heart-warming remarks that brought tears to all in the Cafe. “Working at LCM has been an amazing experience,” said Dr. Taft. “Since the very beginning I was welcomed into this wonderful community, that I now call my family. The dedication everyone puts into this center is extraordinary. I love interacting and getting to know all my patients and I always found it rewarding being able to help them through one of the most difficult time in their lives. I wear both uniforms proudly, my physician’s lab coat and my US military uniform. Being able to go to Afghanistan and provide much needed care to our wounded soldiers brings joy to me. Although I will be gone until Dec 2013. I leave feeling reassured that you will continue to receive the highest level of care at LCMH.”
Dr. Taft’s commitment to her patients will continue during her deployment to Afghanistan. Dr. Taft welcomes to the Comprehensive Breast Health Center Drs. Patricia Clark and Michael Fiorucci. Both skilled physicians will continue to provide compassionate and expert patient care to the Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center while Dr. Taft is deployed.
