Little Company of Mary Physicians Team Up to Perform a “Christmas Miracle”

Mallory Contreras arrived into this world on December 20, 2013 at 6:12 p.m. Her birth was anything but a routine delivery. When 37 year old Margaret Contreras arrived at Little Company of Mary Hospital in the morning hours of December 20th for a planned induction, she had no idea that the birth of her third child was going to be one she would always remember and be thankful for.

After ten long hours of being in active labor with no progress, Margaret’s OB/GYN physician, Dr. Monica Christmas at Little Company of Mary, made the decision that a cesarean birth would be necessary. “As an OB/GYN physician you have to not only think about the well-being of the mother, but also the well-being of the little bundle of joy she is carrying,” said Dr. Christmas. Shortly after, a healthy seven pound baby girl named Mallory was born into the Contreras family and Margaret’s labor struggles began to melt away.

However, following the emergency C-Section, Dr. Monica Christmas identified some abnormal post-operation bleeding. It is then that Dr. Christmas decided to call in Dr. Hamid Nazeer, Interventional Radiologist at Little Company of Mary. An Interventional Radiologist is a board-certified physician who specializes in minimally invasive, targeted treatments using the least invasive techniques currently available in order to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes. At the time, Dr. Nazeer and his family were on their way to a Holiday function when he got the call from Dr. Christmas. Dr. Nazeer, along with his family on-board, made the drive to Little Company of Mary Hospital to attend to Margaret.

After arriving at the hospital and assessing the situation, Dr. Nazeer made the decision to use embolization, or the delivery of clotting agents directly to an area that is bleeding or to block blood flow to a problem area, such as an aneurysm or a fibroid tumor in the uterus. The usage of this temporary embolic agent was able to stop the bleeding and, consequentially, precluded the need for a hysterectomy. Margaret was grateful for this, giving her the potential opportunity to someday have a fourth child.

Both Nazeer and Christmas reassured Margaret throughout the procedure and stayed by her side in addition to following up with her post-surgery to ensure that she was doing well. “We were just doing our job,” said Nazeer. “Everything went smoothly and I am thankful to God to have been able to help.” Margaret ended her hospital stay just before Christmas and was able to spend her time over the holidays with her family, including the newest addition, baby Mallory. Today, Margaret is happy to be home with her three girls and husband, John. “I am very grateful for everything that Dr. Nazeer and Dr. Christmas did for me,” said Contreras. “I never appreciated life more than I do now.”
