More than 12,000 Commemorate 13 Years of Fighting Breast Cancer

Pink pom-poms, tiaras, boas and stylish pink ribbon sunglasses that were the signature item for this year could be seen in abundance at the 13th annual Beverly Breast Cancer Walk this Mother’s Day, May 13th.  The attendance at this Mother’s Day tradition has grown in leaps and bounds, with more than 12,000 walkers who poured into Ridge Park from all over the Chicagoland area. The record-breaking turnout was in support of Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center.

What began as a small walk among friends is now the largest of its kind on Chicago’s Southwest area.  The walk’s evolution honors the lively spirit of its participants and shows the commitment to continue battling a disease that has touched so many.

Before embarking the three-mile path through historic Beverly Hills and Morgan Park, participants were thanked by several guest speakers. “It is a day that we come together, because we believe there will be a cure for cancer,” said Sister Kathleen McIntyre, LCM, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Little Company of Mary Hospital. “We unite today, and your presence here, is a testimony of your belief in our mission.”

“Believe me, we never dreamed we’d be here today with 12,000 plus walkers to honor those who have lost their fight with breast cancer,” says Walk Co-founder, Carol Moriarty. “We are here to support those who are fighting the battle right now in their lives and pay tribute to all those who have survived.”

Kim Patton, a survivor, thanks Little Company of Mary Hospital for assisting in her fight against breast cancer. “I take and enjoy one day at a time,” said Kim. Little Company of Mary Hospital is an Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center, providing women with the latest technology and treatment from an expert medical team.

“The Breast Health Center at Little Company of Mary has been recognized as one of the top in the nation due, in huge part, because of each of you and this community, who have supported us for the last 13 years,” said Dr. Nancy Taft, board-certified breast surgeon for Little Company of Mary Hospital. “I hope you never have to see us, but, if you do face breast cancer, we are here to provide ease, comfort, care and state-of-the-art technology through an expert team and a holistic approach to the healing process.”

All proceeds from this year’s event will go toward Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center that will be located in the new Women’s Center for Life and Health, scheduled to open on October 2012. The Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center will provide the latest technology and treatment approaches from an expert, caring medical team led by Breast Surgeon, Dr. Nancy Taft.  To learn more about the Comprehensive Breast Health Center or to take a free breast cancer on-line risk assessment, please visit To schedule your mammogram, call (708) 499-8550.
