Little Company of Mary Hospital to host 15th Annual Beverly Breast Cancer Walk on Mother’s Day

Last year more than 12,000 men, women and children walked the Beverly neighborhood in commemoration of the countless wives, daughters and mothers who fought the war on breast cancer. Flashback 15 years ago, the Beverly Breast Cancer Walk only consisted of three pioneering women whose vision would inspire the Southland community to think pink on Mother’s Day.

More than two decades ago, Chicago area resident, Carol Moriarty found herself at Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center receiving treatments to aid her in her battle with breast cancer. After a successful plan of treatments, Carol found herself cancer-free and a new profound vision for life.

In 1999, Carol, her sister Nancy Mulcahy and longtime friend, and Beverly resident, Lisa O'Brien decided to give Southland residents a local option in the fight against breast cancer. What started as a walk among a group of friends and family on Mother’s Day quickly grew into a 12,000 participants and community-wide event that has raised more than $3,500,000 with proceeds benefiting the programs and technology at Little Company of Mary’s Nationally Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center.

“Never did I think 15 years ago that our three person walk would transform into a community Mother’s Day family tradition,” said Moriarty. “It’s truly a blessing to see neighbors coming together and decorating their lawns, talented bands playing tunes to entertain walkers, local businesses donating a percentage of their proceeds to the walk, local schools raising money for the walk, off-duty Chicago police men and women donating their personal time to provide security, and most importantly, people joining hands and marching together to raise awareness and celebrate the lives saved and lost to breast cancer.”

Over the past 15 years a talented group of ten committee members have donated their time and talents to make the Beverly Breast Cancer Walk a bigger success each year. “The countless amount of their time spent on registration, marketing, finance, entertainment, and merchandising has not gone unnoticed,” said Patricia Morley, Associate Director of Little Company of Mary’s Foundation Department. “15 years is living proof that if we join hands and talents together, we can make a difference and possibly save lives. Who would have thought 15 years ago that Carol, Lisa and Nancy would today walk with 12,000 more friends?”
