Chicago Medical Society Recognizes Little Company of Mary’s Certified Primary Stroke Center

Little Company of Mary is a nationally accredited Primary Certified Stroke Center and recently hosted the Chicago Medical Society during a half day on-site Acute Stroke Mini-Internship educational program on June 21, 2012. The purpose of this program was to showcase the Center and to promote community awareness of Primary Stroke Center services and care excellence. Little Company of Mary welcomed Neurologist Dr. Neelum Aggarwal as well as Christine Fouts, Membership Outreach Representative from the Chicago Medical Society (CMS), and State Representative Kelly Burke (D-36). Physicians were also able to share concerns regarding patient continuum of care needs, access/compliance with prescribed medications and community needs, resources and services.

In addition to our stroke program presentation, guests toured the Emergency Department with Medical Director Dr. Michael O’Mara, our Diagnostic Imaging CT Suite, and our Neuroscience Unit (2 So.) with Dr. Michael Schwartz, Neuroscience Medical Director. Dr. Schwartz facilitated a dynamic and interactive Stroke Rounds educational session with our interdisciplinary team and invited guests. The role of the Chicago Medical Society is to share and disseminate information learned to our civic leaders and community members and, ultimately, impact legislation impacting acute stroke care and follow-up needs.

About Little Company of Mary Hospital’s Stroke Center:

Stroke affects approximately 9,000 Chicago residents annually. Certified Primary Stroke Centers deliver quality care and demonstrate exceptional clinical outcomes. They also promote ongoing community education focused on reduction of stroke risk factors for stroke prevention, medication compliance and recognition of sudden signs and symptoms of Acute Stroke. Little Company of Mary's Accredited and Certified Acute Stroke Program was designed to ensure that initial and ongoing Acute Stroke care delivery is provided based on evidence based practice recommendations specific to the adult patient population presenting with signs and symptoms of acute stroke/TIA/traumatic brain injury.
