What we can do to immediately make a positive impact on stroke prevention and ultimately lower our stroke risk:

  • Stop smoking
  • Control Diabetes
  • Know your cholesterol levels (control high cholesterol)
  • Know your blood pressure (control high blood pressure)
  • Identify chaotic heart rhythms (Atrial Fibrillation)
  • Identify and treat circulatory disorders (routine checkups and seek medical evaluation for dizziness, leg or arm cramps, shortness of breath, palpitations, weakness, fatigue, fast or irregular pulse or heart beat, anemias)
  • Exercise and healthy dietary changes
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Medical follow up and medication compliance for those with a  previous transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke
