  • More than 90% of hip fractures are in persons 65 years or older
  • Women have a 1 in 7 chance of having a hip fracture in their lifetime
  • Men have a 1 in 17 chance of experiencing a hip fracture
  • Nationwide, there is better than 50% one-year morbidity rate of hip fracture patients
  • Total cost in medical bills and lost income resulting from hip fractures is more than 1 billion a year – or an average of $37,000 per hip fracture

The multidisciplinary Geriatric Fracture Program (GFP), which began operating on August 20, is designed to optimally diagnose and treat hip fractures in geriatric patients.  The goal of the Geriatric Fracture Program is to quickly identify geriatric hip fracture patients and then transition them into surgery to improve outcomes and reduce the risk of complications. It is documented that the longer a patients waits for a hip fracture surgery, their chances of increased complications, including death, increases exponentially.

Dr. Basel Al-Aswad ,Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics, has been a champion of the GFP.  According to Dr. Al-Aswad, “We have been very encouraged by the program’s initial results. Time from admission to surgery has been cut in half, thus reducing the risks of complications.  The Geriatric Fracture Program enhances and streamlines the care we already provide. It can be used as a model for the care of other types of diagnoses.”
