Philosophy of Care:
I believe in partnering with patients to provide quality healthcare. I feel my greatest role as a healthcare provider is not only to manage diseases, but to empower patients by educating them and having them take control of their health. Therefore, my patients can be models of health to their families and communities. Just as my patients have a unique role in society, I believe they have individual, personal concerns when it comes to their healthcare. I approach each patient in a holistic manner. I believe it is vital to care for the physical state, but also to understand the social and emotional needs.
Why did you become a doctor?
I value education and health, and medicine allows me the opportunity to combine both while making a difference in people's lives. I also enjoy interacting with a diverse group of people and building working relationships. Family medicine lets me make and sustain those doctor-patient connections with patients throughout all stages of life.
Work/Life balance:
I am truly blessed to be doing something I care about, but I firmly believe in a work-life balance. I work hard yet play hard which enables me to have a healthy mentality that keeps my passion going to come to work everyday and provide the best possible care to patients.

Philosophy of Care:
My goal as a primary care physician is to to ensure that each patient is provided with the treatment, knowledge, and resources necessary to improve their health. I believe that improving a community by leading patients to better health is the essence of family medicine. It is important to me that each patient feels empowered and knows their concerns have been heard. I am an easy-going person, and I strive to maintain a friendly atmosphere where patients feel comfortable. As well, developing a solid, trusting relationship with each patient is paramount to the practice of medicine.
Why did you become a doctor?
In high school I began exploring various career paths and did some volunteering at the hospital in my hometown. I also worked alongside my primary care physician and was inspired by the relationship he formed with his patients and the work he did for the community. It was a combination of these experiences and my appreciation for the complexities of science that led me to pursue medicine. In doing so, I learned that although there are many ways to work with people and help others, only medicine provided the opportunity to improve people's health, and in doing so make a difference in the community in which they live.
Work/life balance:
I am always learning and recognize the importance of continuing to improve in order to be the best physician I can be for my patients. However, I also have many interests outside of work. I enjoy the outdoors, kayaking, cycling, and spending time on the water. I like watching Big Ten sports, spending time with friends, and making the most of every beautiful season we have here in the Midwest.
Professional Interests:
I am involved in the American Medical Association, and currently serve in a leadership role in the Illinois State Medical Society. I am a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and also within the Illinois Chapter. I believe the only way we can improve our health care system is by having all parties involved taking an active role and working together, including physicians.

Jessica L. Sulkowski, DO
What is your philosophy of care?
I believe that in order to provide the highest level of care, we must take into account all aspects of health: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
Why did you want to become a doctor?
Growing up, I was always interested in the sciences; I remember having a microscope and chemistry set to play with as a child. I also love teaching; breaking down information in a way for someone to understand is truly an art. Medicine allows me to continue both of these passions. As a physician, I feel patient education is one of my most important responsibilities.
What are your sub-specialties and health interests in regard to your patients?
During my training, I witnessed a shift toward more minimally invasive surgical procedures in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The utilization of advanced laparoscopic skills and the da Vinci robotic surgical system is the direction our field is headed and I am excited to incorporate these into my practice.
How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
I am dedicated to this field, and embrace the importance of life-long learning required, but in order to be an excellent physician for my patients, I too, need to follow my own philosophy. Achieving balance is essential. Making sure to take care of myself, whether that means going out for a long run, reading a book, or simply getting a good night’s sleep when I am exhausted, are all things I make sure to do on a regular basis. It is also important for me to continue to nurture my relationships; from making time to get together for dinner, to writing an email, or making a phone call, a little effort goes a long way.
What are your hobbies and interests outside the office?
I can often be found running or cycling along our beautiful lakefront trail. Over the past few years my interest in running has increased; after completing several half marathons, my next goal is the Chicago marathon! I take advantage of Chicago’s amazing restaurant scene and am always trying new places. If I am at home you can find me cooking, baking, or gardening. As much as I love this city, I also love to travel to new places!

Sujal Desai, D.O.
Dr. Desai received his medical degree from the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he continued residency training at Midwestern in Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Desai also completed a Sports and Arthoscopic Surgery fellowship at the Los Angeles Orthopedic Institute.
Main Interests:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Sports Medicine
- Arthoscopic Knee Surgery
- Arthoscopic Shoulder Surgery
Philiosophy of Care:
My background in osteopathic medicine has definitely taught me to take a holistic approach toward medicine. Even though my specialty is orthopedic surgery, I do believe that the physical body is interconnected with the mind and soul. Overall wellbeing stems from the mind, body, and soul all functioning properly. I believe in listening to my patients and taking time with each one to go over their health. Taking time to educate patients is the best way for me to help them understand their condition, which helps in prevention or treatment of their condition. As a surgeon my philosophy or care is to provide non-operative treatment where possible and have surgery as an option for failed conservative treatment.
Why did you decide to become a physician?
I developed an interest in the sciences at an early age and had become familiar with the hospital environment though volunteer work throughout high school and college. I had majored in cell and molecular biology in college but somehow knew that my calling was to make a difference by working directly with people rather than working in the laboratory. Both my experiences early on in a clinical environment and my desire to learn the intricacies of the human body and help people directly influenced me to go into medicine.
What do you enjoy most about being a physician?
I enjoy being able to interact with different people from different backgrounds and being able to provide care as a surgeon to improve their quality of life.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of the office?
I love to spend as much time as I can staying active with sports and fitness and enjoying the warm summer months of Chicago with my wife and my young son.
