What is your philosophy of care?

I believe in empowering patients to take control of their health.  To that end, I enjoy explaining patient’s medical conditions and helping my patients find resources to improve their health. I believe in partnering with my patients to maximize their health. I think one of the most important things in maintaining good health is having a good relationship with your doctor.  I love being a family doctor because I have the opportunity to establish long term relationships with my patients and their families.  It is always and honor and a privilege when a patient trusts me and feels comfortable sharing their concerns.

Why did you want to become a doctor?

Since I got my first “doctor’s bag” as a birthday present, and held that toy stethoscope, I knew I wanted to be a doctor.  I volunteered at local hospitals in high school and college, and what drew me to Family Medicine was the relationships patients had with their family doctors and the impact that relationship had.  I have found Family Medicine to be incredibly rewarding and I can’t imagine doing anything that I would enjoy more.

What are your sub-specialties and health interests in regard to your patients?

I am very interested in women’s heath and preventive medicine.  I think one of the most important things in maintaining good health is to live a healthy lifestyle and to prevent problems before they occur.

How to you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I subscribe to the philosophy of working hard and playing hard. I work hard to be a great physician for my patients, and I work just as hard at being a good daughter, aunt and friend. I try to spend as much time as I can with family & friends, doing things that I enjoy, and making the most of life outside of work.

What are your hobbies and interests outside the office?

I’m an avid reader and have been building my library at home for years.  My favorite activity on a rainy day is curling up with a good book.  I also enjoy boxing, cooking, and shopping.

Howard McNair, M.D., Family Medicine

Dr. McNair offers you an exceptional choice in medical care. He is highly qualified with the latest medical training and brings a commitment to preventative care and patient education to every visit.

Main Interests:

  • Preventative Medicine
  • Diabetes and Diabetes Education
  • Hypertension
  • Weight Management and Exercise
  • Heart Disease
  • Asthma

Philosophy of Care:

I believe the most important thing to do is to listen to my patients and for them to understand that health is healing.  A little patience and a lot of listening leads to a healthier, happier patient. Treating the whole patient (body, mind and spirit) is key to the healing process and to understanding how the body works together totally in recovery stabilization and maintenance.

Why did you become a doctor?

I wanted to become a doctor to help those less fortunate than others to be able to receive quality healthcare and to teach them how to maintain good health. At a very young age I realized that many African Americans suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure. These problems are often not well controlled and I wanted to help my patients and their families to understand these problems and what to do to prevent or control these diseases.

Work/Life Balance?

I try to incorporate aerobic exercise twice a week and eat healthy.  I also rely on my faith to help me maintain a healthy balance in my life.

Special Interest/Hobbies?

I enjoy aerobic exercise, photography, music and cooking healthy meals.

In Conclusion:

Take pride in yourself as well as your health; proper rest, a healthy balanced diet, meditation and prayer are key ingredients to a longer, healthier life!
