To enhance our accuracy in medical record keeping, we may ask you a few questions each time you are entered into our computer system. Although this may seem repetitive, it is another one of Little Company of Mary's quality standards to ensure we provide the best care for you.
To enhance our accuracy in medical records keeping, you may notice our Representatives may ask you your date of birth and street address each time you are entered into our computer system to ensure we have your identity matched correctly with our medical records. This safety measure may seem repetitive, but it is another one of Little Company's quality standards to ensure we provide the best care for you.
Patients whose health coverage is provided by Medicare have likely been hearing more about the federal mandate called "medical necessity" that requires health care providers to screen some physician outpatient test orders for Medicare beneficiaries to ensure they can be billed properly to Medicare.
At Little Company, it's best to have your doctor's order faxed to Central Scheduling (fax: 708-499-8565) as soon as possible after you receive the order so our staff can check the information on it before you arrive. If a physician's documentation is not complete, a medical necessity specialist will alert the ordering physician that the diagnosis as written is not payable for the test ordered. The physician will be asked to send a new order with a new diagnosis or sign/symptom. Patients may need to return for the test if a medically necessary diagnosis is not provided within a 30-minute period.
However, in the event Little Company's staff is unable to obtain a medically necessary diagnosis from the physician within 30 minutes, we will issue a written "advance beneficiary notice" (ABN) to the patient that provides the cost and Medicare's reason for the denial of the test. The ABN is a new, standard letter Medicare has developed to ensure the Medicare beneficiary fully understands the financial impact of it's refusal to pay for services they deem medically unnecessary. ABNs are issued when it is likely a physician-ordered outpatient service will not be covered by Medicare. The Medicare beneficiary then can decide whether to proceed with the test, sign the ABN and accept financial responsibility. Or, the patient can choose to not have the test and return to the physician's office to discuss the test.
