Little Company of Mary's Hospital Foundation hosted its annual Crystal Heart Ball on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the Field Museum. Along with dining and dancing, the premier gala presented two honorees with awards and raffled off a $15,000 grand cash raffle prize.

The Venerable Mary Potter Humanitarian Award was presented to Lisa Ling, Journalist, for her commitment to expose the hidden conflicts facing populations worldwide. The Mary Potter Humanitarian Award honors an individual whose personal and professional accomplishments embody the ideals, vision and mission of Venerable Mary Potter. The award is a testament to compassion, commitment and the gift of empowerment. Through her extraordinary journalism, Ling has traveled across the world to uncover critical situations that are generally unexposed. The Hospital Foundation commended her continued commitment to expose worldwide challenges, which made her an exemplary candidate for the award.

'I am deeply humbled to receive such a remarkable award based on the legacy of Venerable Mary Potter,' said Ling. 'I have witnessed many injustices around the world, but for every inhumanity I've witnessed, I also have experienced the opposite, and that is the wonderful work such as that performed by the Sisters of Little Company of Mary and to all of you and all of the work you do at Little Company of Mary, thank you.'

The Foundation also presented The Sister Nancy Boyle Award for Excellence to Little Company of Mary's Mobile Medical Care Program for their devotion and compassion to caring for the sick. Mobile Medical Care is a community outreach program offering medical care by a Little Company of Mary physician and licensed nurse directly in patient homes. The team offers a service that is vital to many who would not otherwise have access to medical care, because of health problems that limit their mobility.

On hand to receive the award was the Mobile Medical Care team including: Dr. John Hurley, Medical Director of Mobile Medical Care, Dr. Samina Chaudhry, Dr. Delores Lulinski, Dr. Pauline Wong-Hugh, Chris Miller, R.N. and Janet Klonowksi, LPN. Mobile Medical Care was praised for upholding the mission of the Sisters of Little Company of Mary to care for the sick and dying, representing the spirit of Sister Nancy Boyle, L.C.M. The award is a tribute to an individual or program that embodies the legacy and life of Sister Nancy Boyle L.C.M, so that her spirit will live on and continue to inspire others.

Susan and Dr. Brian P. Farrell chaired this premier event along with their co-chairs, Theresa E. Mintle and Michael A. Toolis. They presented four cash raffle prizes including the grand prize of $15,000 to Little Company of Mary's Family Birth Center nurse, Mary Kay Burke, of Evergreen Park. The second prize of $5,000 was awarded to Michelle Dignan, also a nurse in the Family Birth Center, and third prize of $2,500, to John Haggerty and the final fourth prize of $1,000 went to Lydia Ayala.

Proceeds from The Crystal Heart Ball benefited Values. Vision. Innovation: The Campaign for Little Company of Mary Hospital. To learn more about the campaign please visit www.LCMH.org/campaign08. www.LCMH.org/campaign08
