Types of Surgery

OPEN VS. LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERIES
The reference to open vs. laparoscopic surgery refers to how the abdominal cavity is entered as opposed to the type of surgery performed. Each type of weight loss procedure described on this web site can be performed by either means.

With open surgery, a single incision is made to open the abdomen. For women this typically requires 4.5 to 6 inches, and 5.5 to 7 inches for men.

Laparoscopic surgery requires multiple smaller incisions made in the abdominal wall to accommodate a small video camera and surgical instruments. The surgeon performs the procedure while viewing video footage through a monitor, and most feel this gives them a better view and access. Studies also show that laparoscopic procedures can cause less pain after surgery, easier lung function and breathing, fewer complications and a faster return to normal activities.
