Sister M. Joseph Casey Celebrates her 60th Anniversary and Sister Catherine Shalvey Celebrates her 50th Anniversary of their Entrance Into Religious Life

The Sisters of the Little Company of Mary proudly congratulates Sister M. Joseph Casey, L.C.M., on her upcoming 60th Jubilee celebration and Sister Catherine Shalvey, L.C.M., on her upcoming 50th Golden Jubilee celebration.

Sister Joseph, as her Little Company of Mary family and friends know her, is the most tenured employee in Little Company of Marys history. Sister Joseph began her career at Little Company of Mary at age 14 as a dedicated nurses aide. She is a longtime Beverly resident who now resides in Evergreen Park. Sister Joseph clearly remembers her first encounter with the Little Company of Mary Sisters at age 3 when she visited her rheumatic fever-stricken brother in the Hospital.

I was too young to visit the pediatric unit so the Sisters would watch me while my parents visited my brother, explained Sr. Joseph. I remember how much I admired them and wanted to emulate them. I feel blessed that I am now a part of this wonderful heritage of Sisters.

Sister Joseph attended the Formation House in Indiana from 1947 1949 where she professed her vows. She then became a Little Company of Mary Nursing School alum and went on to receive a bachelors degree from Syracuse University and a masters degree from Columbia University, both in New York. Sr. Joseph earned scholarships to both schools.

Sister Joseph chose to be named after Saint Joseph because he was the topic of many conversations with her beloved Italian mother during her childhood years. Ironically, Saint Joseph is the Patron Saint of Workers and Sr. Joseph Casey happens to have a work ethic like no other. Sister Joseph served as the Director of Pediatrics for Little Company of Mary from 1967 1979, where she spent many days and nights caring for children and comforting their families.

After working with pediatric patients, she went on to serve as the patient advocate for Little Company of Mary Hospital and join the Patient Representative Society of Illinois. She continues her role as the patient advocate in the Emergency Department today. Sister Joseph is easily recognized throughout the Hospital and community by her infectious smile and light blue veil.

Sister Joseph realized she wanted to serve God during her First Communion ceremony. Since then, her good works have touched countless people. Sister Joseph has strong ties to the Chicagoland community. Reverend Daniel J. Hartigan, O.S.A., Ed.D., is the celebrant at Sister Josephs upcoming Jubilee, which takes place Sunday, October 14 at Little Company of Mary Hospital Chapel in Evergreen Park.

Sister Catherine Shalvey, known fondly as Sister Kay, also is celebrating an upcoming milestone. Family and friends will surround Sister Kay on Saturday, September 29 for a Eucharistic Celebration in her honor also in the Little Company of Mary Hospital Chapel.

Sister Kay was born and raised in Wheeling, West Virginia. She and her six siblings enjoyed playing together and listening to Notre Dame football games on the radio with their mother. After beginning her career as a legal secretary, she had a peak experience that led her and her friend Addie to visit Chicago and learn more about the Little Company of Mary Sisters.

It was during this visit that I met Sister Eugene Trenner, explained Sister Kay. She radiated a warmth like no one that I had ever met before. I knew then what I wanted to do with my life.

Sister Kay entered the L.C.M. Congregation in 1957. She attended Loyola University and transferred to St. Louis University, where she majored in finance and received her bachelors degree in business administration. She then went on to receive her masters degree in accounting from DePaul University. During this time she also was chosen to travel to Rome for three months to become one of the General Chapters secretaries.

Sister Kay began her career at Little Company of Mary in the Business Office and soon transferred to the Finance Office to become an accountant. In 1981, she was appointed the position of Provincial Treasurer for the American Province of the Little Company of Mary Sisters, a position that she still holds today.

In Sister Kays spare time she enjoys activities with her fellow Sisters as well as listening to classical music. When autumn arrives, you can often find her cheering on her favorite Fighting Irish football team.

The Little Company of Mary Congregation and the physicians, board of directors, administration, employees and volunteers would like to congratulate both Sister Joseph and Sister Kay on their countless contributions to the well-being of our community. Their compassion and dedication are an inspiration to us all.
