Palliative care is interdisciplinary care that aims to prevent and relieve suffering as well as improve the quality of life for patients with chronic disease and/or life-threatening illness.
Palliative Care helps hospitals meet pain and other quality standards required by Joint Commission. The U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT now includes the presence of Palliative Care services among its evaluation criteria for best hospitals.
The Palliative Care Core Team members include our wonderfully compassionate Medical Director Dr. Kimberly Battle-Miller, Nurse Manager, two Social Workers and a Chaplain who embody the palliative care philosophy. The Team, primary care physician and patient care delivery team collaborate on each patient's case.
The Hospital has dedicated a unit to serve patients and families, however, the palliative care framework can be extended to patients throughout the Hospital. The unit on 3 North includes six dedicated in-patient beds with sleeper chairs in each room and a family room with a special kitchenette and bathroom for them.
The Team will work closely with the patient's primary care physician to co-manage each case and ensure that each patient receives the quality care that is synonymous with Little Company of Mary's name.
